Mr J’s Kombi Conversion

Mr J’s Kombi Conversion

Where to start on this vehicle? In short, if you know… you know!

Culminating months of product research, countless hours in development and one incredibly special headliner. Several years ago we had the pleasure of building Welsh rugby captain, Mr J, with one of our vehicles. This year he returned to NewWave, with fresh ideas and a brand new vision for his next vehicle.

We’re always here to help and advise with specification recommendations, but we do love it when our clients approach us knowing exactly what they want! With no stone left unturned, and no option left unfitted, Mr J had already extensively researched the build for his new T6.1 Kombi. After a detailed and precise consultation, it was decided that an URBAN Automotive exterior and a very special NWWC interior would be the basis for the build.

It was a privilege to be approved by URBAN to supply and fit their T6.1 kit for Mr J: it’s no secret that they are incredibly selective with who they allow to fit their products.

Mr J’s vehicle started life as a basic Volkswagen factory Kombi, arriving to us ready for a full strip down and rebuild in early winter. One of our first interior jobs was a complete Skinz lining, ensuring 100% coverage to bring road noise down to the lowest possible level and give the superior driving feel to that of a premium Audi SUV. The New Wave team re-trimmed extensively with alcantara throughout the vehicle; including the headliner, cab, sun visors and A&B pillars.

All factory grey plastics were then removed and sent over to ‘Motion Factory’ for refinishing in Satin black, another simple yet incredibly effective OEM+ touch, leading to a higher level of finish.

The steering wheel and gear gator were then given a bespoke red top stitch to match our in-house upholstered Audi RS diamond stitch seats, which were then paired with our custom luxury vehicle mats.

The headliner on this vehicle was a work of art within itself. An evolution of the NWCC signature floating headliner, 6 machined spotlights were milled in to sit flush with the alcantara, whilst an LED halo created our renowned ‘floating’ effect. 350 fibre-optic starlights were then flush fitted by hand, taking more hours than Mike cares to mention!

A dream vehicle requires award winning audio solutions. A 4.9 bit digital processing amplifier powered a fully custom audio system, consisting of subwoofers in the door, tweeters in the pillars and our NWCC bespoke speaker pods housed to the rear of the vehicle (available for purchase separately on our website). Wishing to extract the best from this incredible setup, the experts at Four Car Audio visited us on-site to tune the system to perfection.

The exterior or the vehicle received incredibly special attention, with the aforementioned URBAN body kit fitted by us here at New Wave. This consisted of a full carbon fibre front bumper, diffuser with quad-tipped exhaust, a two piece spoiler, side bars and laser lamps. The perfect stance was achieved through lowering 40mm on Eibach adjustable springs and Urban 20” wheels wrapped in Falken tyres (giving a fantastic curved shoulder for the ultimate ‘flush fitment’). Oh, don’t even get us started on the electric sliding doors!

This vehicle is truly one of a kind, and every element of the build is a work of art within itself.

We’re certain that Mr J and his family will enjoy this incredible Kombi for years to come. Not only is this one of the best spec’d Kombi’s we have ever build, but it still embodies the family practicality and build quality we put into all of our conversions.

We’re proud of the level of finish achieved by the entire NWCC team, and can’t wait to see what build ideas Mr J has in store for us next time!
