The Watts Mercedes sprinter conversion
Ok so, we promised we would take a break from the larger Sprinter and Crafter builds due to the T6.1 Verso build being so popular and in huge demand, but this is a build we couldn’t really say no to due to the customer being a long-term loyal client of ours. The Mercedes Sprinter L2 H2 arrived to us as a new panel van complete with bulkhead and ply lining so the strip out stage had to begin, with removal of the existing cheap and nasty ply lining kit, floor, factory bulkhead and B pillar trims.
The vehicle is now stripped, cleaned and prepared for the cutting stages…. The Maxx Fan, and Transporter HQ slide windows were installed allowing light to flood into the rear. On to killing that road noise using a selection of brands and products we trust.
Skinz sound absorption panels
16mm Extreme van liner from DODO
Dodo fleece wool
Birch ply panelling
Trunk liner to exposed metal work.
Once the above stages were complete, we moved on to the design, Including the 6 piece bed bracket kit. (Which will be listed on our Web shop complete with fixings, frame work and Hex board top options making life easy for you DIY guys.)
Along with the bed we had to design a clever and safe mounting system for the Ford quick release Kombi seating to be fitted to the Mercedes chassis in a safe and neat manner, this was designed from scratch using 3mm laser cut and folder steel perfectly cut and shaped to meet the Mercedes CAD model. Again another item which will be added to the web shop enable information customers to install the Ford seats to any van chassis.
Although this conversion does look very minimalistic, at first glance it is loaded with some clever ingenuity from the masters of electrical components “Voltronic” including the below list
240V under Bonnet hook up
Voltronic RCD breaker board
Voltronic B2B charger
Voltronic solar regulator
Voltronic 230v charger
Voltronic charge display
120 AGM leisure battery
Carbon Monoxide alarm
Webasto Diesel heating complete with 7 Day timer
Over head down lights
Entry strip lighting illumination
Hafelle reading lights
Garage space lighting
8 power points including 12v, USB, 230v
Next stage is making this interior a place you want to spend time in, the usual hardwearing Trunk liner application was installed to all the exposed metal work, Birch ply panels and the usual NWCC slatted headliner complete with down lights and LED strip lights, Altro Transfloor for that clean easy, durable, hardwearing floor covering which will outlive the van. Egger HPL furniture board was selected for the overhead storage, garage divider wall and family table again another durable hardwearing product combined with our 2mm ABS edge banding.
Some clever swivels added to the first row seating allowing this young adventurous surfer family to really open up that living space and create a warm space to get stripped down out of those wet suits and into those dry robes ready for the trip home or to the next destination. A large garage and through door was a must on this project to enable the family to unclip one of the Ford seats and slide the boards straight through into the living space. Huge load space for adventure equipment and bedding.
This family wasn’t looking for an all singing camper complete with cooking facilities they simply wanted an adventure van to make their adventures even more fun and practical, holding on to those teens for as many years as possible we hope we have helped this family create more surf memories that will last a life time.
